How To Disable Sounds In Windows

Personally, I hate the sounds that Windows uses to alert you if something is wrong or when you try to click on something or anything else that makes Windows make a sound. I almost always have music going when I am working on my computer and having little clicks, pops, dings and bells just doesn’t make my music sound very good.

So one of the first things that I make sure that I do when I install a new version of Windows XP or Windows Vista is to disable the Windows sound scheme. Some of you that may be reading this will be using XP and some may be using Vista, so I will explain how to turn off the sounds in both operating systems.

How to Disable the Sounds in Windows XP

  1. Click Start on the Taskbar and then select Control Panel from the menu
  2. Click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices
  3. Click on Change the sound scheme
  4. Click on the drop down box and select No Sounds
  5. Click No if you receive a popup box asking if you want to save the previous sound scheme
  6. Click Apply in the lower right hand corner of the window and you’re all set

How to Disable the Sounds in Windows Vista

  1. Right click on the desktop and select Personalize
  2. Click on Sounds
  3. Click the drop down box and select No Sounds
  4. Click No if you receive a popup box asking if you want to save the previous sound scheme
  5. Click Apply in the lower right hand corner of the window and you’re all set

You can also choose to select which actions make sounds instead of turning the sounds off completely. Instead of selecting No Sounds from the drop down box, just select each sound in the Program window, click the drop down box located under Sounds: and then click Apply. You can choose to listen to the sound by clicking the Test button or upload your own sound in .wav format by clicking the browse button.
